Conference "20th Anniversary of Diplomacy of the Republic of Croatia", Zagreb, 18 June 2012

On the occasion of Croatian Diplomacy Day, the Association of Croatian Diplomats and the Institute of Public Administration organized the diplomatic conference entitled "20th Anniversary of Diplomacy of the Republic of Croatia". The conference was held on 18 June 2012 in the premises of the Old City Hall in Zagreb.

The conference was opened by the president of the Association of Croatian Diplomats Nives Malenica, who has shortly explained the tasks and objectives of this newly formed association. Vedran Đulabić, PhD, welcomed the attendees on the behalf of the co-organizer of the conference, the Institute of Public Administration. Zdravko Mršić, MSc, as the first Croatian Minister of Foreign Affairs explained the problems that Croatian diplomacy faced at the moment of its emergence in 1990. Vesna Pusić, PhD, Croatian Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, stressed that Croatian diplomacy is facing a number of challenges, caused also by the fact that Croatia is entering the European Union in the time of crisis. Due to the great tasks ahead of Croatia, but also because the diplomacy has special importance for small countries, it is necessary to provide high quality and professionalism of Croatian diplomatic service. Therefore, the Minister has particularly stressed the importance of cooperation between the Association of Croatian Diplomats and the Institute of Public Administration.

The conference was divided into three thematic panels. The first panel was devoted to the question of the meaning of diplomatic profession and its current challenges, the second panel had the task to explain the tasks of the European External Action Service (EEAS) and to determine what is the perspective of Croatian diplomacy as a part of the EEAS. Finally, the third panel discussed the issues of public diplomacy and how to effectively brand the country and improve cultural and economic diplomacy.
